Working Cat Zines
Personal Work ·In 2020, I found some thumbnail sketches in an abandoned sketchbook. They were for a short series of comics about 'Waiter Cat,' a cat who works as a waiter at a restaurant. The comics were all two panel gags in simple heavy black line drawings. They made me giggle, so I quickly drafted them digitally and compiled them into a short zine, interspersed with some drawings of Waiter Cat lazing about the restaurant. The comics were first written when I was personally waiting tables, and reflected my own experience on the job. Waiter Cat's indifference to customers and the requests of their co-workers was enviable to me, as I had been growing increasingly frustrated with work. Fast forward 3 years (and a few jobs) later, I decided to turn Waiter Cat into a series and created 'Barista Cat' based on my current experience as a barista. The set up and jokes are similar, but now Cat is working as a barista, stealing croissants from customer plates and licking whipped cream off lattes. These humorous zines are a way for me to laugh at my own frustration over work and my career. I plan to make more poking fun at other jobs I have had, and I hope that people can find some enjoyment in Working Cat's adventures. Barista Cat and Waiter Cat will both be sold at zinefests which I attend. My next event is May 13th at Halftone ZineFest in Lexington, KY.
