New Release: “Heart Full of Lead” – a Noir Study in Ink & Shadow
Personal Work ·
"Heart Full of Lead" is a narrative noir study that visualizes the darker, more desperate side of intimacy. Drawing inspiration from 1940s crime fiction and mid-century pulp art, this high-contrast ink illustration strips away sentimentality to focus on tension and shared danger. The composition uses stark chiaroscuro to frame the couple not as lovers in a park, but as partners in a plot.
Heart Full of Lead a new narrative illustration project launching just in time for the Valentine’s season—but with a twist.
Moving away from traditional sentimental tropes, this piece explores the "Noir" side of relationship. The concept visualizes romance through the lens of 1940s crime fiction: high-contrast chiaroscuro, grit, and tension.
The Process: The artwork was created using a hybrid analog-digital workflow, starting with traditional India Ink on Bristol board to establish the heavy shadow shapes, followed by digital coloring in Clip Studio Paint to achieve the vintage "screen print" texture.
Availability: The collection is now available as Heavyweight Apparel and Archival Giclée Prints. You can read the full breakdown of the project and the "Anti-Valentine" concept on the studio blog.

After earning my postbaccalaureate in Digital Art from the University of Oregon in 2009, I began work as a freelancer for the now-defunct Dynamic Measurement Group, creating children’s book illustrations for educational readers. Throughout the years, my clients have included Markosia Comics, Topps Marvel (digital trading cards), authors like Chad Huskins and Josh Woods, and I’ve contributed concept and sequential art for many movie and television pitches.
For me, every image is an opportunity to tell a story. My work is driven by a passion for narrative, creating compelling, character-focused illustrations that blend a classic storybook feel with a fresh, modern aesthetic. From expressive character designs to full-page editorial illustrations, I enjoy adding a sense of whimsy, adventure, and sincere warmth.
I live and work in Eugene, Oregon. However, I’m available for editorial and narrative illustration worldwide. Message me for commissions and projects.
