Happy Lunar New Year! A few years ago, I had the pleasure of illustrating a picture book for Sleeping Bear Press titled Nian, The Chinese New Year Dragon, written by Virginia Loh-Hagan. This book presents a classic Chinese legend that explains why holiday celebrations include lighting firecrackers, wearing red, and making food offerings. It tells the story of a girl, Mei, who inspires her village to defeat a fearsome dragon. I loved creating the Mei and Nian characters for this story and also hand-lettering the cover title. You can find the book in local bookstores and online.
